With Facebook quickly approaching nearly 1 billion users and the increase in new web applications like Spotify and Foodily, the famous “Like” button is in dire need of some siblings.
And we’re not talking about the “dis-like” button.
Facebook has announced that more than 60 new apps are going live. These apps will be apart of the Open Graph allowing people to tell their stories and add things they love to their timeline.
At f8, we announced Timeline and the Open Graph – the next generation of the platform which enables people to tell their stories through the apps they use. The Open Graph has already had a significant impact on music, news, and video, but this was just the beginning. Starting today, developers can build apps that let people add anything they love to their Timelines – whether it is eating, traveling, shopping, running or taking pictures.
The Frictionless Experience of The Open Graph
The Open Graph is a way to take data from other applications on the social web and bring it all into Facebook where you can share your experiences with friends and family. The revamping of the Timeline and News Feed are all hints to the future of sharing.
For example, if you are listening to music on Spotify, Facebook can display your actions with verbs like “listening” to (your favorite band) on Spotify. The same goes for cooking, eating, traveling, running, and plenty of other activities we all do, share, and love.
Supported Applications Including Spotify
Anyone can submit an app for public use on the Facebook Timeline. For developers wanting to learn more about how it all works, Eddie O’Neil posted tutorials and guidelines on Facebook’s official blog.
According to Facebook, “Timeline apps are meant for the activities you want to share with friends.” New actions include a dictionary of words such as “Want,” “Own,” “Read,” and more.
Some bigger apps to mention that are already doing this in addition to Spotify include the Washington Post Reader and Rotten Tomatoes.
With the new Timeline, you can install these apps and express yourself in new ways. Everyone from, food lovers, traverleres, musicians, movie buffs, and runners can all share their interests and experiences. Now more than ever our lives become even more serendipitous.
Despite all the fun this might sound, privacy concerns will still be an issue as we all learn to manage the new settings inside of Facebook.
